10 Democrats Vote What They Feel the Lesser of Two Evils to Avoid Government Shutdown | Washington, DC Mar. 14, 2025 - The budget resolution to continue funding until the end of the Fiscal year in September was passed in a 62-38 vote tonight with help from several Democrats who felt shutting down the government would have been more harmful to the American people than allowing Republicans to pack it with their agenda. Leading the Democrats was minority leader Chuck Schumer who stated that to vote against the resolution would have allowed Trump to "cherry pick which parts of the government to reopen" after the resolution was finally approved.
Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois also voted to advance the budget resolution. He said, "But there is even less I like about shutting down the government with Donald Trump and Elon Musk taking a chainsaw to the federal government's workforce and illegally freezing federal funding, the last thing we need to do is plunge our country into further chaos and turmoil by shutting down the government."
Schumer had already announced he would support that bill the day before much to the ire of many Democrats. Rep. Sean Casten of Illinios wrote on social media, "McConnell abused the filibuster to make America worse. Schumer is refusing to use the filibuster to... accomplish what, exactly?"
Postscript: In the following days, some Democratic legislators were calling for a change of leadership in town halls and social media. Quite a few Democrats were disappointed in the blank check given the Republican agenda by Democratic leadership.
Commentary
This is one of those times when you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. I feel in this situation that both sides of the Democratic caucus have a valid argument. The Democrats should fight against some of the pork for billionaires and stealing needed relief from the poor that the Republicans have committed in this budget. Schumer is right in that it is the executive branch who would decide which areas are needed in a shutdown and they are looking for any excuse to close agencies and government officials they do not like, like those curing diseases, feeding the poor, providing equal opportunity and giving overwatch to the fraud, waste and abuse of which the Trump administration wants none. The Nazis in charge of our executive branch right now would love to shut these agencies down. We can only pray that God will eventually show us His plan, because right now the plan is not good for those in need. However, I do not blame God for all this, I blame the Devil and his minions running the government right now.
