| Economists Predict Tarriffs Will Cause Decline in Stock Market and Dollar | Washington, DC Mar. 21, 2025 - Within days, leading economists predict that the tariffs hinted at by Trump will cause turmoil in the stock market and threaten the dollar as foreign owners of our debt drop it like a hot potato. The chances of a recession by the end of the year was only about 23% a little over a month ago, but has risen to 50% and will continue to rise as the tariffs take effect on the economy. As Democrats predicted in the 2024 campaign, these tariffs will be the equivalent of a huge sales tax on the average American as inflation soars. Those who can least afford the tariffs will be the most affected.
In a CNBC CFO Council Survey, CFO’s were found to be generally “pessimistic†about the state of the overall U.S. economy and uncertain about the stock market. 95% of CFO’s said Trump policy is impacting on their ability to make business decisions. Many business men supported Trump as president because they foresaw fewer taxes and less red tape under his presidency in the future. However, his first priority is to raise tariffs. Within days he plans to raise them exponentially and his approach is too “chaotic, disruptive and extreme for businesses to navigate effectivelyâ€, according to the CNBC study.
For a little history, on February 4th, Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all imports from China and Hong Kong. March 4th, that tariff rate was increased to 20% and a 25% tariff was placed on imports from Canada and Mexico, though Canadian energy products were reduced to 10%. Goods that qualify under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) rules of origin are exempt from these additional North American tariffs. March 12th, a 25% tariff on global steel and aluminum imports was implemented, affecting major suppliers, including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and South Korea. Trump has promised more tariffs in April, when he will roll out his full plan to put tariffs on the whole world. Add that to his promise to raise more tariffs on any country who reciprocates, and this can very well get out of hand in a hurry.
With China and other industrial countries holding our debt in the form of bonds, Trump is playing Russian roulette with our economy while his brand of chaos and disruption is taking a toll on 401K retirement portfolios through the stock market and the economy as a whole. Trump promised tariff’s yet many in business thought it was just bluster and an attempt at coercing countries into better trading conditions. His praise of the failed tariff policies of McKinley and those of 1930 that led to World War I and the Great Depression, in that order, is scaring a lot of businessmen as the reality of a second Trump term with no economic guardrails sinks in.
Commentary
"The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud, 'Alas, alas, for the great city that was clothed in fine linen, in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, with jewels, and with pearls! For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste.' And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning, 'What city was like the great city?'" (Rev. 18:15-18 ESV)
"The shining city upon a hill" envisioned by Reagan that America was, will soon be taken down by a fellow Republican leader, not out of any sense of retaliation for any real wrongs done against American, but on a whim and a promise. The post-pandemic economy carefully rebuilt by the Biden administration and the envy of the world is going down much quicker than the Trump's taking down of the post-great recession economy rebuilt by Obama from the ruins of George W. Bush's errors. As the Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt brought us out of the ashes of Republican Hoover's Great Depression, Clinton, Obama and Biden took us out of recessions caused by their Republican predecessors. Reaganomics caused the poor economy of senior Bush, but George H. W. got the blame. Clinton left us with less debt and a better economy than his predecessor. The same goes for Obama and Biden. See a trend here?
However, Trump is taking no chances this time. He has lined his cabinet and economic advisors with those who no longer act as guardrails against his whims and is taking us down this time with a greater speed. He is adding greater tariffs to the mix to ensure annihilation of the economy this time as fast as possible. It has always been amazing to me the Christians who overlook the historical fact that the Republican party is now and always has been the party of the corporation, by the corporation and for the corporation. This credo in the past led to taking all safeguards away in each new Republican term that protect the common man from greed and corruption, thus causing economic havoc (historically bank failures, stock market crashes, etc.) However, Trump has added a huge amount of economic incompetence to this process making the coming great recession or even economic depression all but a Fait accompli. The Republican party is now not only hurting the common man, but their incompetence is also harming greatly the corporations they usually allow to run rampant with greed.
My baccalaureate degree being a major in history, I am always reminded, and once again pass on to you this great advice from George Santayana: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." When are my fellow Christian brothers and sisters going to quit voting for the ruination of our economy by insisting that Republicans support us and we should support them. You are being played for a sucker. Trump does not believe in God. He has almost never attended any church and is not a member of one. His greed is only exceeded by his incompetence and immorality. You would never have voted for such a man even a couple decades before based in the immorality alone, much less the greedy bankruptcies and incompetence. So why are some of you still supporting him now? Send an email response to the editor and it may appear on our forum discussion page.
